Commissioned by the Carl Junction High School Band, Carl Junction, MO; Ryan Churchill, Director of Bands.

This show was commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Not only is music from the period used throughout -- with original material along the way -- but, the music is constantly “at war” in its presentation. Melodies and harmonies mix with each other to give an interesting, but “conflicted” sound to this show. Eventually, these elements break right into an all out battle. A resolution follows and gives way to a hopeful, patriotic and uplifting ending.

I know I’ve seen numerous Civil War shows at marching band contests, so I tried to make this one different. Utilizing the immensely creative wealth that Ryan Churchill brought to this project, I believe you’ll be happy to hear a fresh take on a standard idea.
