the Second world war

Commissioned by the Amarillo High School Band, Bruce Collins, Director of Bands, this show is a depiction of the American home front during the Second World War. We find our nation in peril as we respond to seeing the Newsreels of the Pearl Harbor attack; we watch our young soldier get a quick weekend pass; we see him off to battle; and we celebrate his bravery and his valor as he fights for the freedom of those he’s left behind.
The music in this show is diverse, but all works together to tell the story: Music from the movie Patton (Jerry Goldsmith), Michael Kamen’s Band of Brother’s score, Anchor’s Aweigh, Sing, Sing, Sing, Moonlight Serenade and original music are all included.
The commissioning band put together an elaborate pre-show that highlighted a number of World War II era commercials along with actual radio broadcasts of the news from the front lines. Through the production itself, a student narrated the famous opening lines of FDR’s response to the Pearl Harbor attack (“a day that will live on in infamy.”)
(Note: the pre-show ends and the actual show begins when the woodwinds enter. This kept the show from going over the Texas-allotted 8 minute performance requirement.)
